Cavo Greko ΚΥΠΚΕ (11.10.2023)

On Wednesday we visited Ammos tou Kampouri beach. At the beginning the students laid down on the sand, closed their eyes and listened to the sounds of the sea and the sand moving, making them understand and appreciate the surrounding place. After that, students were divided into 8 groups and participated in different activities. Firstly, they searched for plants, shells, small animals, and waste and saw them closer using a portable microscope.

Then they followed the instructor’s information/methodology, to find, separate, divide into categories and count the different types of microplastics in the sand. With the information collected, the students created a chart, showing the microplastics that were found.

Then the students visited Cavo Greco environmental center, where they watched a documentary about Cavo Greco, the fauna and flora of the area. At the center they also visited the museum, where they saw some invasive fishes of the Mediterranean, the skeleton of a dwarf hippopotamus, as well as a skeleton of a dolphin that died after consuming plastics in the sea. Before leaving Cavo Greco Cape, students walked around the sea and visited the Agioi Anargiri church.

By participating in all these activities, the students worked together, communicated and discussed about microplastics pollution at Ammos tou Kampouri Beach and in Cyprus in general. They learned that we must respect the environment and life in general.  Through the activities described above, students developed very important skills like adaptive thinking, communication skills, collaboration skills, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving Skills, as well as empathy and perspective skills.

We went to Kambouri beach and we laid down to the sand,we closed our eyes and we heard the sounds of the sea.

Then we dug the sand and we found microplastics. After we divided them into categories.

Afterwards we walked down the beach in order to find microplastics in the rocks, collect them so we could see them in the microscope.

We watched a documentary video about Cyprus animals and plants.

Later, we walked and saw the museum of the Cavo Greco environmental center.  There were a lot of rare endemic fishes and other exhibits.
