The Mediterranean is polluted by an estimated of 730 tones of plastic waste every day. Concentrations of microplastics are estimated to be higher than those on average found at global level.
Some of the most polluted countries in the part of Mediterranean sea are Egypt, Italy and Turkey as they waste 730 tones of microplastic per day.
It is estimated that there are 1653 microplastics per kilo of sea salt. These microplastic can cause genetic damage to marine life and pose a great threat to marine organisms. Also, microplastics indirectly affect the ecosystem by adsorbing other marine pollutants.
