Plastic Gyres

In 1992 a cargo ship dumped 28 000 rubber ducks in the sea on its way to USA. The currents  carried the ducks all over the world. Since plastic is almost indestructible, ducks are found even today.

So, does THE SAME THING HAPPEN TO MICROPLASTICS AS WELL?

Ocean gyres are large system of rotating currents and there are five plastic gyres in the world.

Some interesting information about Plastic in the ocean gyres:  There are six pounds of plastic for every pound of plankton. Gyres draw in the pollution that we release in the ocean when they circulate ocean waters.

But what happens to the plastic in the ocean gyres?  The sun and waves can break down the plastic into smaller pieces called microplastic, which can be ingested by smaller marine organisms and from there to the food chain and humans.
